Best practices for
technical tracking

01.

Always lowercase

GA4 is case sensitive. "Email" and "email" become different sources and pollute your reports.

02.

Consistency is king

Define a naming convention and always follow it. If you started with "cpc", do not switch to "paid-search" next month.

03.

No spaces or accents

Spaces become %20 in the URL. Prefer underscores or hyphens and remove accents to keep things readable.

04.

Central documentation

Keep a master spreadsheet with every UTM you create. It avoids duplicates and helps new teammates.

05.

Source vs Medium

Remember: source is WHO brought the click (google, meta). Medium is HOW (cpc, social, email).

06.

Granular utm_content

Use this field for A/B tests. Identify which ad variation or button drove each conversion.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is UTM?
UTM (Urchin Tracking Module) are parameters added to the end of a URL that tell Google Analytics and other tools where the traffic came from, which medium was used and which campaign the click belongs to.
What is utm_source for?
utm_source identifies the traffic origin, meaning where the click came from. Common examples are google, linkedin, meta and newsletter.
What is utm_medium for?
utm_medium describes the medium or channel the traffic arrived through, such as cpc, social, email or referral. It answers "how" the visitor arrived.
What is utm_campaign for?
utm_campaign names the specific campaign, letting you group and compare results from the same marketing action, like product_launch or black_friday.
Does UTM work with GA4?
Yes. GA4 reads UTM parameters and shows them in traffic acquisition reports. Since GA4 is case sensitive, the automatic standardization in this tool helps avoid noise.
Can I use UTM in WhatsApp links?
Yes. You can add UTM parameters to any link shared on WhatsApp, as long as the destination is your own page with tracking set up.
Does UTM help SEO?
UTM does not improve organic ranking directly. It is used to measure traffic and attribution. To avoid duplicate content, use the canonical tag on destination pages.
Where is my data stored?
Everything happens in your browser. Saved campaigns use the local storage (LocalStorage) of your own device. No URL or campaign data is sent to any server.
